Nineteenth-century Chinese watercolour on silk typically features delicate pigments applied to woven silk fabric, often depicting traditional narratives, flora, and fauna for both domestic and export markets.

These works were traditionally crafted using fine-woven silk fabric as a ground, natural mineral and botanical watercolours, and traditional wooden or lacquered framing materials.

Authenticity is assessed through examining the weave of the silk substrate, the ageing characteristics of natural pigments, hand-painted brushwork details, and the construction methods of the antique frame.

An antique silk painting can be styled as a focal point on a neutral wall, allowing its historical narrative and subtle colour palette to complement contemporary minimalist or eclectic interior schemes.

Preservation requires framing with UV-protective conservation glass, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity, and maintaining stable indoor temperatures to prevent silk degradation and pigment fading.
