Equine art gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, often commissioned by landowners and nobility to document prized animals, later expanding into pastoral and naturalistic depictions by various regional artists.

Traditional oil paintings from earlier eras typically utilised hand-ground pigments mixed with linseed oil applied to stretched canvas, wooden panels, or heavy paper, mounted within hand-carved or moulded wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining canvas age, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher bar construction, artist signatures or stamps, and pigment composition using specialised lighting or professional appraisal methods.

An antique painting can add warmth and historical depth to a contemporary space when contrasted against minimalist walls, placed above a sideboard, or incorporated into a curated gallery wall arrangement.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, keeping the canvas free from dust with a soft brush, and refraining from using liquid cleaners on the paint surface.
