Kesi is an ancient technique of silk tapestry weaving in China, characterised by its cut-silk effect where pattern colours are woven with separate shuttles, creating distinct vertical slits between colour changes.

Traditional Kesi panels are woven using fine mulberry silk threads, sometimes incorporating metallic threads such as gilt-paper strips to add shimmering detail to the design.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weave structure under magnification to check for the characteristic slit-tapetry technique, the quality and type of silk fibres, natural dye oxidisation, and traditional stylistic motifs.

Framing historical textiles behind conservation-grade glass allows them to function as sophisticated focal points on neutral walls, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist spaces.

Antique silk should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, kept in stable humidity-controlled environments, and handled minimally using clean cotton gloves to protect fragile protein fibres.
