This pair of nineteenth-century oil paintings on canvas depicts coastal maritime scenes featuring sailing vessels, fishing boats, and figures along the shore. The artworks are executed in an oil paint medium on canvas with a delicate palette of muted blue and earthy tones, and both are housed within heavy, ornate gilded wooden frames finished in gold leaf with elaborate decorative scrollwork and deep moulding details. Each piece measures 59 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's library or a study, these paintings hang on a wall above a sideboard to bring historic maritime character to an interior space. The heavy giltwood frames display detailed leaf carving at the corners and deep relief work along the outer edges, complementing the atmospheric skies and coastal water rendered in the canvases. The set provides a balanced pair for traditional wall placement.

FAQs

Marine art of the 19th century typically focuses on coastal landscapes, shipping vessels, and seafaring activity, capturing atmospheric weather conditions and maritime light influenced by Dutch Golden Age traditions and Romanticism.

Artists painted using oil pigments on stretched canvas or wooden panels, which were subsequently mounted into carved timber frames decorated with gesso detailing and finished in gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate craquelure across the painted surface, natural oxidisation or patination on the reverse wood or canvas, and period-correct joinery within the gilt frames.

Positioning paired maritime artworks symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table creates a balanced focal point that integrates traditional fine art into contemporary living spaces.

Position works away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and high humidity to prevent varnish discolouration or frame cracking, dusting surfaces gently with a dry microfibre brush without liquids.
