Description

A good sized 19th Century Classical Grand Tour Bronze group of Ariadne And The Panther, modelled with Ariadne reclining to the left while her head is looking to the same side, with her robe across her Panther with wide stride and  head turned to Dexter. Circa 1830. After Johann Heinrich Dannecker. In good condition with a well built up rich patina with highlights in areas. A crisp casting and harder to find model.

This nineteenth-century sculpture is a neoclassical patinated bronze group titled 'Ariadne and the Panther', inspired by Johann Heinrich Dannecker. The piece depicts the mythological figure Ariadne reclining nude atop a walking panther, draped in fabric that pools over the animal's flank and legs. The sculpture is rendered in a dark brown tone with a rich patina and lighter highlights across the polished high points of the metal. The figures rest upon a plain, tiered rectangular plinth base with stepped mouldings around the bottom edge. The cat strides forward with its head turned to the side, wearing a collar around its neck, while the female figure props herself up by resting her left arm upon the animal's shoulder. Measuring 38 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 16 cm deep, this sculpture works well displayed upon a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study. The compact proportions allow it to fit comfortably on a narrow shelf, desktop, or tabletop surface. The detailed casting shows expressive facial features on both figures, individual toes on the paws, and neatly gathered folds within the cascading drapery.
