Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The motif originates from German sculptor Johann Heinrich Danneckers marble masterpiece completed in the early nineteenth century. Depicting the Cretan princess Ariadne riding a panther associated with Dionysus, the model became a celebrated icon of Neoclassical art and was widely reproduced in cast bronze throughout the nineteenth century for Grand Tour travellers.

These sculptures were typically cast in bronze using either lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting techniques. Once cast, artisans refined the details by hand-chasing the metal surface before applying a chemical patina using heat to achieve rich brown or dark brown tonal finishes.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-chasing details in the hair, drapery, and animal features, along with natural surface wear on raised contact areas. Look for heavy cast weight, seamless assembly of component parts, correct era foundry stamps, and evidence of historical patination rather than modern painted coatings.

A classical bronze figure functions as a focal focal point when placed on a mantelpiece, marble console table, or lit pedestal. Contrast the dark, sculpted metal against neutral stone walls, dark mahogany cabinetry, or modern minimal backgrounds to emphasize its silhouette.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft natural bristle brush. Avoid using chemical cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes, and apply a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax annually to protect the original patina from atmospheric oxidisation.
