Description

Woven in the Poltava region of Eastern Ukraine in the last quarter of the 19th century, this lovely piece has all the hallmarks of the best Ukrainian tapestry kilims. The wool is soft and pliable, and all the dyes are from natural sources. The charming repeating floral pattern on an oatmeal field is very much in the Ukrainian folk tradition, while the honey main border provides the perfect frame. Note the lovely delicate colouring, lots of pale blues, light yellows, greens and pale browns. But the composition is brought to life by a delightful fuchsia red, a masterful touch. The technique is also absolutely masterful. Eccentric wefts have been used throughout to create curvilinear forms and three dimensionality. Subtle blends of the wool further enhance the sense of texture. This is a wonderful kilim which is both highly decorative and collectible. Cherished through the generations, it has survived in good condition with only some minor scattered restoration. Professionally cleaned.
