A stick barometer is a meteorological instrument designed to measure atmospheric pressure using a column of mercury. Historically, these devices were vital for predicting weather changes, particularly for maritime, agricultural, and industrial applications such as mining.

Traditional barometers typically feature a solid timber framecommonly oak, mahogany, or walnuthoused alongside glass tubes for the mercury column, and engraved brass or ivory scales for reading measurements.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining the construction methods, the ageing of the brass components, hand-engraved scale markings, maker signatures, and the presence of original mercury tubes without modern replacements.

This type of instrument fits well in a study, hallway, or library, mounted on a neutral wall where its vertical wooden grain and metallic dial act as a focal point, pairing effectively with traditional or transitional decor.

Barometers should be kept away from direct sunlight and dramatic temperature fluctuations. The wooden casing can be treated occasionally with appropriate wax, while the glass and brass require gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth.
