Description

A very good example of a 17thc pewter "triple reeded" charger of impressive size, it is clearly marked with touchmarks of IT within a shield, with two stars above the shield and one star below, a coat of arms below a crown and a passant lion facing right....I have researched the IT and one possibility is John Trout of London, but I think it is more likely the IT on page 380 , illustration 5977 of Cotterell - Old Pewter Marks of an unnamed maker working from 1670-1700 . The charger is in very good condition and would be a great addition to any collection..!

English. 17thc.

Preserve antique pewter by keeping it in a stable environment away from high humidity, dusting it with a soft cloth, and avoiding aggressive chemical polishes that strip the historic patina.

They can be displayed vertically on plate stands on a sideboard or mounted on a wall to introduce industrial texture and historic character into contemporary or traditional spaces.

Authenticity is identified through makers touchmarks stamped into the metal, the weight and dark grey patina of the alloy, and signs of genuine age-related wear such as surface scratches and minor warping.

These pieces were cast from an alloy primarily composed of tin, often combined with lead or copper to achieve durability, and finished by hand on a lathe with mouldings like triple reeded rims.

Seventeenth-century pewter chargers were large, heavy plates used primarily for serving food or display in affluent households before porcelain and ceramic tableware became widespread.
