Staffordshire Bull Baiting Jug, C. 1810. Pearlware.

Description

A rare Staffordshire pottery jug, c. 1810. Printed and over painted to one side, with a Bull baiting scene, in a rural setting. The reverse, with a farmers wife trying to scare a hawk away from her hens and chickens.

A Chinoiserie scene of Mandarin ladies in a garden adorn the jug, beneath the spout. The neck painted in iron red, with a continuous band of stylised leaf scroll.Having a simple strap handle.

ex Anthony Belton Collection.

Height – 17 cm, 6 3/4”.

Width (Handle to spout) – 19 cm, 7 1/2”.

Condition – Slight wear to the glaze. No damage. No restoration.

Pearlware is a type of refined earthenware developed in Britain during the late eighteenth century. It is characterized by a cobalt-tinted lead glaze that gives the white ceramic body a cool, bluish finish, which was highly popular throughout the Georgian era.

These jugs were molded from refined clay and fired before receiving transfer-printed or hand-painted enamel decoration. A translucent glaze containing cobalt oxide was then applied and fired to seal the surface.

Authentic pearlware typically displays blue-tinted pooling in crevices, foot rims, and under handles where glaze collected. Additional signs include lightweight earthenware construction, hand-applied overglaze enamel details, and light wear around the base.

Display the jug as a standalone decorative piece on a wooden sideboard, mantelpiece, or within open kitchen shelving. Pairing it with contemporary glass or natural timber accents balances the historical motif with modern decor.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth. Avoid soaking the piece, using abrasive sponges, or exposing it to dishwasher temperatures to prevent damage to the glaze and enamel.
