FAQs

A French Empire style bed, often termed a lit bateau or sleigh bed, originates from the early 19th-century neoclassical design movement under Napoleon Bonaparte, characterised by scrolled ends and classical motifs.

These beds are typically constructed from dense cabinet timbers such as mahogany or walnut, frequently featuring figured veneer panels and sometimes accented with gilt-bronze mounts.

Authenticity is determined by traditional joinery methods, timber oxidisation patterns, hand-carved detailing, and period-appropriate veneer thickness rather than machine-cut precision.

This piece works well as a focal point in a master bedroom, paired with neutral linens, minimalist lighting, and contemporary bedside tables to balance its heavy classical presence.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the wood finish, and occasionally applying appropriate beeswax polish to nourish the timber.
