French antique (1865) bronze racehorse ‘Gladiateur’ (Gladiator) by Alfred Barye Fils (1839-1882). Gladiateur (1862-1876) was a French thoroughbred racehorse which, in 1865, won the English 2,000 Guineas and Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. Gladiateur is considered a legend by France Galop and ‘one of the best horses ever to grace the turf in any century’ by the National Sporting Library of Middleburg, Virginia. Signed 'Alfred Barye Fils, sculpteur 1868', on the integrated bronze oval base (mounted on a marble base). 45cm high x 42cm long x 13cm deep, weight 12.6kg.

Alfred Barye Fils was a French artist known for his meticulously detailed bronze sculptures of the Belle Époque. Born in Paris in 1839, Bayre was apprenticed to his father, Antoine-Louis Barye, a premier animalier sculptor. Barye fils followed the example set by his father, working alongside him in the atelier to craft exquisite equestrian models and other fauna through the method of sand casting.
