An aquatint is a specialized intaglio printmaking technique created by applying acid to a copper plate covered in rosin, producing subtle tonal variations similar to watercolour washes. In the eighteenth century, artists used this medium alongside hand-tinted watercolours to produce detailed landscape and topographical prints.

Aquatint prints were executed on heavy handmade rag paper using oil-based printing inks for the etched lines. Once the print was pulled from the copper plate, watercolour pigments were applied by hand to add soft natural colours to the composition.

Authentic prints from this era display a distinct plate mark impression around the border, a fine resin-grain texture under magnification rather than modern printing dots, period publication lines detailing engraver and publisher, and laid paper characteristics such as visible watermarks.
