Italian 19th C Settee Hall Seat Sofa

19th century
Description

A very decorative solid wood Italian three seat settee, sofa or hall bench from the last decade of the 19th century when the Eclectic Umbertino Style was popular in Italy for its mix of decorative elements from the past.

It has a lovely shaped back and apron, out swept scrolled arms and finely shaped cabriole front legs.

The black leather type material has aged in a very attractive way and overall it is a strong sturdy sofa of very good quality.

We are not sure if this is still the original upholstery and webbing but it certainly can be used as it is. For the long term it would benefit from re-webbing.

Declaration

Pareglio & Ayres Antiques Interiors has dated this 19th Century Italian Settee to the 1890s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Italian settees frequently draw inspiration from Rococo and Classical Revival styles, featuring fluid carved wooden frames, shaped seat backs, scrolled armrests, and decorative cabriole legs.

These pieces were typically crafted using dense hardwoods such as walnut or beech for the carved frame, paired with deep leather or textile upholstery secured with individual brass studs.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-carved joinery, irregularities in hand-driven brass studs, genuine oxidation on metalwork, and natural wear patterns on the timber frame and leather seating surface.

An antique settee can be placed in an entry hall, foyer, or alongside contemporary minimalist artwork in a living area to create a refined focal point bridging historic craftsmanship with modern space.

Preserve the frame and upholstery by placing the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting wood carved surfaces with a dry cloth, and applying specialist leather conditioner periodically.
