Description

An exquisitely painted oil on board landscape scene. The work depicts in great detail a typical pastoral idyll, with a watermill and a river, at sunset. The painting is highly competent for this type of work and is signed in monogram though the artist is unidentified. The work is in excellent untouched condition with the board having been mounted on later card. The gilt frame is wonderful quality by a fine Parisian frame maker and is in good condition with some odd minor repairs. The whole has a great country house look and is ready to hang. C.1880.

FAQs

Pastoral landscape paintings typically depict idealized rural scenes, featuring rustic cottages, fields, and gentle natural scenery, often invoking a sense of calm and nostalgia.

These artworks are traditionally executed in oil paints on stretched canvas or wooden panels, housed within frames constructed from carved wood and gesso, finished with gold leaf or metallic gilding.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition, craquelure patterns, and the ageing characteristics of the wood and gesso frame.

Such a piece can be integrated into contemporary spaces by hanging it against neutral walls to create a striking focal point, or by pairing it with minimalist furnishings to highlight its traditional craftsmanship.

Oil paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, gently dusted with a soft, dry brush, and handled minimally to protect both the canvas and the delicate frame.
