Description

Antique Georgian Mahogany Chest of 6 Drawers

A fantastic condition restored 3 over 3 chest of drawers.

We are delighted to bring to you this fine example of a rare Georgian (circa 1830) 6 deep descending drawer chest of drawers in an unusual 3 over 3 layout. This stunning chest of drawers features wild grain Mahogany to the drawer fronts framed with cock-beaded edges. The chest is complete with all of its original brass oval plate dropper handles which have never been replaced and incorporate a lion to the centre. This simple yet elegant chest of drawers is in an outstanding condition featuring its original beautiful French polished finish with a lovely rich Mahogany colour. The finely dovetailed drawers are particularly clean inside and are smoothly operating. This beautiful chest stands proudly on its original shaped bracket feet.

The chest has been restored in our workshop so is solid with no loose joints or wobbles and is free from woodworm. The drawers have had some of the drawer runners replaced and rebuilt as necessary so now have little to no wear and do not drop when opened. The chest of drawers has been carefully revived, cleaned and waxed, maintaining its original patina whilst giving a lovely natural sheen. This lovely restored chest of drawers is in home ready condition and is fit for every day use for many more years to come.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Georgian style spans the reigns of the first four Georges, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and a transition from heavier walnut to refined mahogany timber influenced by master cabinetmakers such as Thomas Chippendale.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods such as oak or pine, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and traditional mortise and tenon frames.

Key indicators of authenticity include hand-cut dovetailing, irregular timber shrinkage, original brass hardware or properly filled backplate impressions, hand-planed drawer bottoms, and natural wax patination developed over centuries.

A classic wooden chest anchors contemporary living spaces or bedrooms by adding textural warmth and historical contrast, pairing effectively with minimalist decor, neutral walls, and modern lighting fixtures.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a dry lint-free cloth, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
