Pair of Large Chinese Bronze Horses

19th century
Description

A wonderful mirror image pair of antique Chinese horses from the late 19th Century.

They are fully caparisoned and saddled. The inscriptions on the horses flanks are traditional Chinese and translate as ''Blessing''.

They are made from heavy bronze and are allover decorated and inscribed in gilt.

These horses are exceptional and in very good condition commensurate with age. They are very decorative and each horse weighs in at 18kg.

Our spaniel, Alfie, kindly demonstrated their size.!

Provenance: The horses are from the estate of the late Gabriela Grillo (1952-2024). She was one of the most globally celebrated dressage rider, having won a team gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, as well as many other medals in top European championships.

In 2021, Gabriela was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class.

Although of German origin, she was an Anglophile and kept a beautiful pied-à-terre near Westminster. This was where, with her passion for important horse inspired antiques, she kept much of her collection.

We can discuss collection or delivery options.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Equine imagery holds significant cultural importance in Chinese art history, prominent since the Han and Tang dynasties. Horses symbolised military strength, speed, nobility, and prestige, leading to the creation of detailed ceramic and cast bronze figures for ceremonial, burial, and decorative purposes.

Historically, Asian bronze figures were crafted using the lost-wax casting technique or section moulding. Metalworkers would construct intricate moulds, pour molten copper alloy, and later finish the surfaces with hand-engraved patterns, chased details, and applied chemical or gilt patinas.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit signs of age such as natural oxidation, subtle surface wear, uneven patination inside unpolished crevices, and casting marks consistent with traditional foundry techniques rather than modern seamless mass production.

Large metal sculptures serve as architectural focal points when placed symmetrically on a sideboard, anchoring a fireplace hearth, or flanking an entryway console. Pairing dark or gilded metalwork against neutral plaster walls or timber joinery enhances visual contrast.

Dust bronze sculptures regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or water; application of a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax once a year helps protect the patina from moisture and fingerprints.
