Unusual Cut Silhouette Group King George III

This very striking silhouette features 30 small head and shoulders cut profiles arranged mostly in pairs. It includes cut profiles of King George III and Queen Charlotte positioned centre top. The top row appear to be 18th century; the next row are early 19th century and includes two officers; the third row is late 19th century and includes a naval officer in a tricorn hat; the bottom row are clever little head studies.
 
An old hand-written label on the back of the frame indicates that this was a gift from a father to his daughter, Mary Witherby, in 1874. It seems probable that this was Mary the daughter of Walter and Lydia Witherby of Islington, Middlesex. Mary was born in 1862 so she would have been twelve when she received this silhouette. The 1871 Census shows that Walter was a retired law stationer and that the family were fairly well-to-do with several household staff including a governess for Mary and her younger brother.
