FAQs

Classical oil portraits served as primary visual records for affluent families and institutions, reflecting the artistic techniques and social hierarchies of their respective eras.

These works typically utilise linen canvas stretched over wooden frames, layered oil pigments bound with linseed oil, and gesso-prepared wooden substrates embellished with hand-carved, gilded mouldings.

Authentication involves examining canvas age, craquelure patterns under magnification, pigment composition, stretcher bar construction, and the joinery and gilding techniques of the associated frame.

Position the piece as a focal point against neutral walls, balancing its heavy visual weight and ornate gilding with clean-lined contemporary furnishings to create a sophisticated juxtaposition.

Maintain stable ambient temperatures and relative humidity, keep canvases away from direct sunlight, and consult a professional conservator for periodic cleaning and varnish maintenance.
