Description

This superb 19th century large bronze figure was produced at the highly acclaimed French foundry Bronze Garanti Au Titre Lv Depossee and it bears their stamp and registration number. This fine sculpture depicts a pretty young woman dressed in typical simple working clothes from this period standing with her arms folded and resting on a rustic wooded rake whilst taking a rest from the hey making on a hot summer day. It was sculpted by the famous French artist Henri Godet 1863 – 1937 who studied at the Ecole National Des Bearux – Art with Mathurin Moreau. Godet was married to the famous French feminist and orator Nelly Rousell. This superb bronze is high quality and finely detailed and has a wonderful mellow brown- green patination. Nineteenth century French bronze sculpture is characterised by meticulous attention to detail, expressive realism, and often employs the lost-wax casting method, frequently depicting allegorical, classical, or pastoral subjects.

These pieces were typically crafted using copper alloy bronze, finished with various chemical patinas ranging from deep brown to verdigris, and cast using either sand casting or lost-wax techniques.

Authentic period bronzes often feature foundry marks, artist signatures, natural patination consistent with age, and crisp chisel work visible in the chasing process after casting.

They serve as sophisticated focal points on wooden mantelpieces, sideboards, or dedicated display plinths, contrasting effectively against minimalist backgrounds.

Preservation involves dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the patina from moisture and handling oils.
