A wonderful view from the cliffs, with two beautifully dressed figures walking along the costal path towards the historic town of Cromer. The fine church dominates the skyline. Figures can be seen on the shoreline below, with the pier in distance.

Finely painted with pleasing attention to detail and good strong colours.

Signed lower left S. T. Bachelder, titled verso and presented within a glazed gilt gesso frame with ivory coloured mount that bears areas of light staining.

Condition: Please note two scratch type marks as photographed. These are on the underside of the glass. They appear to be scratches on the glass, but may instead be marks that will simply remove with a clean.

Stephen John Batchelder was born at Little Bolton, Lancashire in 1849.

During the 1850s, Stephen lived at Oak Street, Norwich with his family, and by the 1860s the family were boarding at Skirtbeck Corner, Boston, Lincolnshire. The family were described as travelling showmen.

Stephen went on to gain a position with a Norwich photographer in the 1860’s and later married at St Augustine’s church in 1868. He gave up photography in 1882 in favour of painting and in 1883 and relocated to 11 Maud Terrace, Belvedere Road, Great Yarmouth. He gained a good reputation as being a prolific watercolour painter of the Norfolk Broads.

By 1911, Stephen had relocated to 7 Garrison Road, Great Yarmouth. He was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1894-1928 and in 1883 he exhibited works from 11 Maud Terrace, Belvedere Road, Great Yarmouth, three watercolours ‘It’s Going to Rain’, ‘Boat House-Irstead Shoals, Norfolk’ and ‘Green Lane, Neatishead’ and in 1923 from Gorleston Road, Great Yarmouth an oil 'Sunsplashes, Burgh Flats, Breydon' and two watercolours 'Hickling Broad, River Thurne' and 'The Bure, near Salhouse', He also exhibited at the Woodbridge Art Exhibition in 1889 two watercolours 'On the Bure' and 'On the Yare' and in addition, was a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1927-1929 and of the Great Yarmouth & District Society of Artists in 1928.

Stephen John Batchelder died at 7 Garrison Road, Great Yarmouth in 1932, aged 83.
