Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is incised directly into a plate using a sharp needle. The process creates raised metal ridges called burrs, which retain ink and produce characteristically soft, velvety lines when printed onto paper.

Nineteenth and early twentieth-century etchings were typically produced using copper or zinc plates printed onto handmade rag paper or wove paper using oil-based inks. The prints were often mounted in card apertures and framed under glass.

Authentic antique drypoint prints display clear plate mark indentations around the image perimeter, distinct feathering along line edges caused by the burr, and period-correct paper stock. They frequently feature pencil signatures, edition numbers, or publisher inscriptions along the lower margin.
