Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are often embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This suzani is in 'full work' the silk basma stitching covers the entire surface, the ground is hand spun linen known as 'karboz'. The suzani probably originates from Tashkent in north-east Uzbekistan.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tashkent suzani textiles originate from Uzbekistan in Central Asia, historically hand-embroidered by brides and female family members as part of a traditional wedding dowry. Characterised by large medallion motifs, botanical patterns, and dense silk needlework on cotton or silk foundations, these textiles served as decorative bed covers, wall hangings, or room dividers.

Traditional suzanis are crafted using silk embroidery threads worked onto a foundation cloth composed of narrow woven strips of cotton or silk-and-cotton fabric. The primary stitches include basma (couching) and tambur (chain stitch), creating dense, textured patterns across the surface.

Authentic antique suzanis display hand-spun foundation fabrics composed of multiple narrow panels stitched together after embroidery. Natural vegetable dyes yield subtle colour variations, while visible hand-drawn guidelines and minor irregularities in needlework confirm hand production.

A suzani can be displayed as a framed or mounted focal wall hanging in a living area, draped across the foot of a bed, or folded as an accent throw on neutral upholstery. The bold geometric and floral motifs introduce pattern, texture, and historical depth to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Preserve antique suzanis by keeping them away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent thread fading and fibre degradation. Cleaning should strictly be performed by a specialist textile conservator, while storage requires rolling the textile around acid-free tubes rather than folding.
