FAQs

A chest on chest, often called a tallboy, is a tall piece of furniture featuring one chest of drawers stacked directly on top of another, originating primarily in the late 17th century and gaining immense popularity during the Georgian period.

These pieces were traditionally constructed using dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany or native timbers like oak and walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and solid timber secondary woods.

Authentic pieces can be identified by hand-dovedrawered construction, irregular grain patterns in the timber, period-appropriate brass hardware, and signs of age-related oxidisation and wear on the interior surfaces.

A traditional tallboy provides vertical storage and works effectively as a statement piece in a bedroom or hallway, contrasting clean modern walls with rich wood tones and classic architectural proportions.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and clean periodically using a soft, dry cloth without applying modern silicone-based polishes.
