Description

Pauline Chamberlain - A Set of Six Large Architectural Drawings circa 1915 in Pen and Ink that are highly decorative. These are all signed and framed. The frames are solid and generally good condition with mounts that have 'washlines' which are decorative lines, typically drawn in watercolor, ink, or other mediums, that can be added to the mount board to enhance the artwork and create a more refined presentation. .

The six drawings are Tent and Base, Greek Doric, Erechtheum, Corinthian, Tuscan Order and Roman Ionic

Pauline Chamberlain is an interesting person born in California in 1894 and died there 1957. Her relatives from both sides came to the United States from Europe in the 1700's and her maternal grandparents were among those who made the sometimes harrowing journey from Ohio to California in about 1860 as members of the 'wagon train'. Pauline went to the University of California, Berkely in 1912 studying Architecture, where she became one of the earliest women to graduate with a Architectural Degree from the University where these drawings were completed in c1915.

These have always remained in the same family.

Architectural drawings have historically been used by architects and designers to map out classical orders, building facades, and structural details before construction. Over time, these technical illustrations transitioned from working documents into collected fine art pieces prized for their precision and academic aesthetic.

These works typically utilise high-grammage paper, archival black ink applied with fine-nibbed pens or quills, and often watercolour washes or graphite for shading. Preservation usually involves acid-free mounting and framing under glass to protect the paper from light degradation.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper type for age-related toning, inspecting the ink lines under magnification to check for hand-drawn characteristics rather than modern printing dots, and verifying signatures, watermarks, or studio stamps on the reverse.

These pieces work effectively when hung in symmetrical galleries or series along hallways, studies, or living rooms. Pairing them with minimalist frames allows the intricate linework and classical proportions to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Paper artworks should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing. Ensure they are framed with UV-protective glass and acid-free backing boards to maintain structural integrity over decades.
