FAQs

Antique oil paintings encompass various historical periods such as the Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionist movements, characterised by the use of pigment suspended in drying oils on canvas or wood panels.

Traditional construction typically involved woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretcher frames, or prepared wooden panels, painted using ground pigments mixed with linseed or walnut oil.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining canvas ageing, craquelure patterns in the oil layer, stretcher bar marks, period-appropriate framing, and artist signatures or exhibition labels on the reverse.

An antique painting adds depth and character to modern spaces when hung framed on a neutral wall, illuminated by a dedicated picture light, or leaned on a mantelpiece for an eclectic look.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight, and consulting a professional art conservator for surface cleaning or varnish removal.
