FAQs

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, a period characterised by industrial manufacturing advancements alongside traditional craftsmanship. Mahogany remained a favoured hardwood for case pieces due to its durability, rich grain, and suitability for deep polish finishes.

Authentic period chests typically utilise solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary structural timbers such as pine or oak. Construction features hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes, solid brass hardware, and secondary wood drawer linings.

Authentication relies on examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, hand-planed secondary woods, and appropriate oxidisation and wear patterns around drawer pulls and key escutcheons.

Integrating period pieces into contemporary spaces involves pairing the rich wood tones with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and modern accessories to create a balanced, layered aesthetic that highlights the craftsmanship.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity and temperature away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber cracking and veneer lifting. Routine maintenance involves dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying traditional beeswax.
