Eterna Kontiki Super 130 Wristwatch

1940 - 1960
Description

The Eterna Matic KonTiki holds historical significance in the world of wristwatches. The KonTiki collection is inspired by the famous Kon-Tiki expedition led by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl in 1947. The expedition involved a journey across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft named Kon-Tiki, with the goal of demonstrating that ancient civilizations could have traveled across oceans using primitive means.

Eterna, the Swiss watchmaker, created the KonTiki line of watches to commemorate this remarkable feat of exploration. These watches are designed to embody the spirit of adventure, resilience, and discovery associated with the Kon-Tiki expedition. The watches often feature robust construction, water resistance, and distinctive design elements that pay homage to the nautical theme.

The Eterna Matic KonTiki watches typically emphasize durability and reliability, making them suitable for both everyday wear and more demanding outdoor activities

From the research we’ve conducted, we gathered that this is a first generation Super-KonTiki and based on the serial number it is anticipated that the watch was produced in 1962. The watch features a 37mm stainless steel case, its original black T25 Swiss dial with arrow markers and date aperture at 3 and a rotating bezel with 10-minute markings.

The watch operates from an automatic movement and despite being water resistant we advise against using it in water due to its age.

Fitted to an unsigned black leather strap with a pin buckle.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the late 1950s, the KonTiki series was created by Swiss watchmaker Eterna to commemorate Thor Heyerdahls 1947 Pacific Ocean expedition on a balsa wood raft. Designed for underwater durability and ocean exploration, these timepieces gained a reputation for robust engineering and distinct dial design.

Vintage diving timepieces were constructed with solid stainless steel cases to withstand water pressure and corrosion. Dials featured acrylic crystals, rotating aluminium bezel inserts, and luminous radium or tritium paint applied to the hour markers and hands for underwater legibility.

Authentic models feature a relief engraving or gold medallion depicting the KonTiki raft on the case back. Additionally, genuine examples possess original manufacture markings on the movement, signed crowns, and characteristic geometric or triangular luminous hour indices.

A vintage dive watch with a leather or steel strap transitions effortlessly between casual and formal wear. It functions as a classic accessory alongside tailored suits, smart jackets, or relaxed knitwear.

Mechanical timepieces require periodic servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years to clean and lubricate the movement. Vintage watches should be kept away from strong magnetic fields, high humidity, and water exposure unless modern pressure seals have been tested and replaced.
