Grand Tour Pugilists After Canova

Good pair of early 20th Century, Art Deco period, Grand Tour patinated bronzes of the ''Pugilists'', Creugas of Durres and Damoxenos of Syracuse, after the marble originals by Canova. Well cast with a rich dark brown patination and mounted on single piece of beautiful Portoro marble, probably for displaying on a fine quality deco credenza. Completed in 1796, in 1802, the two statues, along with the Perseus Triumphant, were purchased by Pope Pius VII and can be seen to this day in the famous Octagonal Courtyard in the Vatican in Rome. Italian, circa 1920.
