Art Deco bronze Javelin thrower by Michel Decoux. A stylised silvered bronze sculpture of a kneeling male athlete with arm raised holding a javelin or spear. The folds of his robe are highlighted with gold. Standing on a Brazilian portoro marble base. Signed Decoux in the bronze. The Spear is removeable. A stunning Art Deco figure that evokes art deco style, beauty and elegance. Good original condition. French c 1920
 
Size Base 27 x 10 cm and height including base to the top of the hand 25cm
 
History
 
Michel Decoux (1837-1924) Belgian but worked mainly in France. He was regarded as an animal sculptor though he occasionally sculpted people. He was best known for making groups of hunting scenes, and specialized in wild animals (elephants, panthers, etc.). Influenced by cubism and part of the art deco movement, he liked to work in bronze. He is listed in Hachet – Dictionnaire illustre des sculpteurs animaliers.
