Early Antique Sultanabad Carpet

19th century
Description

A stunning early Sultanabad carpet from around circa 1880 with amazing green dyes used in the terracotta border.  A pre Ziegler production carpet with floral motifs, leaves and scrolling vines. Beautiful early blue dyes and golden yellow tones, these dyes date over 140 years old and have mellowed wonderfully.

We can see some wear and lower areas of pile scattered over this ancient carpet.  Structurally strong with no holes or splits, this carpet would have been thin and with a low pile when constructed in Sultanabad, Persia in the late 19th century.  With our sturdy underlay underneath this carpet it will provide durability and strength, so it can still be used for another 100 years.

We would happily welcome you contacting us to request a home visit, having visited customers in their own homes for over 30 years. We feel it is vital to view carpets and rugs at home, so you can make the ideal choice, trying various options in a room. A professional, free service we have offered since 1990.

Book a visit to our barn showroom, we have over 1000 antique and contemporary carpets, rugs and runners on offer.  We are located in the small village of Crondall in Surrey, around an hours drive from London, please schedule an appointment to visit us, as occasionally we are closed due to home visits.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sultanabad carpets originated in the late 19th century in the Arak region of Persia, created specifically to meet Western demand for large-scale floor coverings. They are characterized by wide-scale botanical patterns, supple weaves, and softer colour palettes tailored for European and American interiors.

Sultanabad rugs are constructed with spun wool pile hand-knotted onto a sturdy cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool was historically dyed using natural vegetal and mineral dyestuffs to achieve rich, enduring shades of indigo, madder red, and sage green.

Authentic Sultanabad carpets feature a slightly larger, suppler knot structure compared to urban city weaves, alongside a depressed warp weave. Look for characteristic all-over palmette patterns without a dominant central medallion, accompanied by natural dye abrash variations throughout the field.

A Sultanabad carpet serves as a grounding textile anchor in both classic and contemporary interiors. Interior designers frequently pair these carpets with dark mahogany furniture, brass accents, or clean-lined modern upholstery to create visual contrast against the ornate floral motif.

Regular maintenance requires gentle suction vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to protect the wool fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean, dry cloth, and complete washing should be conducted exclusively by professional antique textile conservators.
