Late 19thc French Gilt Bronze Vide Poche C1880

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

An extraordinary late 19thC French gilt bronze object of art in the form of a dented gentleman’s country hat c1880. This unusual and quirky object was probably intended as a vide poche, the place where the contents of pockets are put, such as loose coins, keys or even bullets. It is made of solid cast bronze, quite heavy, with the gilded finish known as ormolu. The decorative leaf and feather adornment attached to the hat band suggests the design was based on the sort of hat worn out hunting or shooting. It is a really interesting and amusing piece but useful at the same time… and bronze!

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vide poche, which translates from French as empty pocket, is a small shallow dish or tray designed to hold loose pocket items such as coins, keys, and pocket watches. Popularised during the 19th century, these items were placed near entryways or on dressing tables to collect daily essentials.

Craftsmen commonly used cast bronze, gilt bronze (ormolu), porcelain, enamelled metal, and marble. Gilt bronze was particularly favoured for its ability to hold fine decorative detail and simulate solid gold through mercury gilding techniques.

Authentic 19th-century gilt bronze displays high-quality hand-chasing, crisp casting details, and a distinct weight characteristic of solid metal. Oxidation or wear to the gilding in high-touch areas often reveals the underlying bronze substrate.

These decorative objects function well on modern hallway consoles, bedside tables, or office desks to store small everyday items. Their sculptural qualities also allow them to be displayed independently on bookshelves or coffee table trays as standalone accents.

Gilt bronze should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to prevent dust accumulation. Harsh chemical cleansers, abrasives, and metal polishes must be avoided, as they can strip or damage the delicate gilt layer.
