FAQs

Faux finishing techniques, such as grain painting to imitate rare woods like birch or maple, became popular during the 18th and 19th centuries as an accessible way to achieve an upscale aesthetic using domestic timbers.

Traditional chests are typically constructed from native hardwoods or softwoods such as pine, oak, or birch, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction and pegged frames for structural integrity.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing such as surface craquelure, oxidisation under the original paint layers, hand-forged or early iron hardware, and hand-planed surfaces hidden on the interior components.

An antique painted chest serves as a characterful anchor in contemporary spaces; pair it with minimalist decor, neutral walls, and modern lighting to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preserve original painted finishes by keeping pieces away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dusting gently with a dry microfiber cloth, and avoiding chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners entirely.
