Description

Antique Chesterfield Sofa circa 1880 -

Ebonised legs and original black porcelain and brass wheels.

Brown heavy cotton covering.

Traditionally upholstered with a sprung seat and back, built up with hessian and horse hair filling.

The upholstery is in good structural order but the outer fabric is a little tired looking with a few pressure marks here and there.

Width 196cm x Depth 90cm x Height 65cm, with a seat width of 137cm, seat depth of 58cm and seat height of 34cm.

I've noted some small losses to the top part of the legs which can be easily fixed and we can have that promptly done prior to dispatch.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Chesterfield sofa style originated in the 18th century, traditionally associated with British aristocracy and distinguished by its low seat base and rolled arms of equal height.

Authentic period pieces typically feature solid hardwood frames, traditional coil springs, hand-tied webbing, and horsehair or wool stuffing, covered in heavy textiles or leather.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the frame construction joints, hand-stitched internal webbing, wear patterns on the wooden feet, and period-appropriate textile composition.

Pairing this traditional seating piece with minimalist lighting, neutral walls, and contemporary abstract art creates a balanced contrast between historical character and modern aesthetics.

Preservation involves gentle regular vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and consulting professional conservators for deep cleaning.
