Helen Layfield Bradley was a friend and associate of L.S. Lowry. She did not begin to produce paintings until she was 65, when she did so as a way of showing her granddaughter what life was like when she was a child. During the following decade she attained international celebrity and recognition as an artist. In 1979 she was awarded the MBE for services to art but died shortly before she was due to receive the honour from the Queen. Mrs Bradley had three exhibitions at the Mercury Gallery in London and one in Los Angeles and was much loved both sides of the Atlantic.

Her paintings typically depict scenes from Edwardian Lancashire with groups of figures, including her family and friends. A familiar figure in many of her paintings was a neighbour, Miss Carter, who wore pink. She gave her name to the first and most famous of four books of her works “And Miss Carter Wore Pink”. Her works are typically signed with a small black fly, as this one is.

Mrs Bradley’s landscape scenes are very rare and show a dreamlike quality and stunning use of colour and light.

This picture is of the estuary of the River Leven in the Lake District, Cumbria, as seen from Lancashire. It shows a house where she had stayed, near to her home on the edge of the Lake District and was originally painted as a gift to her hosts.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the mid-20th century, British landscape artists frequently adopted impasto techniques, using palette knives or heavy brushwork to create physical textures on canvas that captured the terrain and weather of rural landscapes.

Impasto paintings are created using thick layers of oil paint applied with brushes or palette knives onto canvas or board, typically framed in painted timber moulding.

Authentic works from this era display pronounced, raised paint surfaces with visible tool marks, natural aging, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

Position the painting as a central feature above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table, pairing it with neutral tones and natural materials like timber or stone.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or stiff fibers that could snag on raised impasto impasto ridges.
