Ships barometers were essential navigational tools developed to measure atmospheric pressure, helping mariners predict changing weather conditions at sea.

Authentic period barometers typically feature heavy cast brass housings, bevelled glass lenses, and intricate paper or metal dial faces containing aneroid mechanisms.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight of the cast metal casing, the quality of the dial typography, hand-engraved details, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation.

Mounting the piece as a focal point on a dark-painted or panelled wall introduces industrial character and nautical heritage to contemporary spaces.

Preservation involves dusting with a soft dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes to maintain the natural patina accumulated over time.
