Joan Gillchrest was one of Mousehole’s and Cornwall’s most recognised and celebrated artists. Her vibrant art sits firmly alongside other great artists of the St. Ives School from the 1960s. She was born into a wealthy and illustrious family of eminent architects and always loved architecture herself. She said that buildings were “in her blood” and painted many of the churches and chapels of the Penwith peninsular. She had a long and interesting life, being both glamourous and bohemian, working as a model and mixing in the artistic circle of her day. As a very private person she never really understood the professional success she enjoyed and was bemused by the demand for her work. She said that she painted in order to give people enjoyment and rarely visited exhibitions, not wanting to be influenced by the work of others. She did not suffer fools gladly, but was warm, loving and generous to those who knew her. She built up a tremendous following and is recognised today as being one in a distinguished line of British naïve expressionists. From 1958 she lived and worked in Mousehole and in 1963 she put up the first string of lights outside her home at Christmas. Now, every year the village and its harbour are illuminated, and the event draws large crowds. This is just one of the enduring legacies from this extraordinary woman.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The St Ives School and Cornish art movement gained international prominence in the mid-20th century, focused on expressive landscapes, coastal views, and simplified forms inspired by the topography of Cornwall.

Artists during this period frequently applied oil paint onto canvas, masonite, or wooden boards, often building up heavy impasto textures before mounting the artwork into timber frames.

Authentic works often feature distinctive painterly techniques such as bold outlines, architectural forms, artist signatures on the board or reverse, and period-accurate framing materials.

This style of artwork functions effectively as a focal piece hung above a sideboard or fireplace mantel, complementing both mid-century timber furniture and contemporary minimalist interiors.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources, dusting the frame lightly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth rather than using liquid cleaning agents.
