This watercolour painting on board originates from 1890 and is executed in an Orientalist style. The palette centres on sandy ochre tones with blue highlights in the sky and figures' robes, set against a dark wood frame. The composition depicts a Middle Eastern desert landscape featuring two tall palm trees in the foreground alongside two figures resting in traditional hooded robes. In the mid-ground, an arched stone bridge spans a dry riverbed, leading towards lush green vegetation near the base of a rocky hill. Atop the hill stand the weathered ruins of a fortress under a pale, cloud-dappled blue sky. The painting measures 40 cm by 30 cm, providing a compact statement piece for interior display. Placed above a sideboard in a gentleman's library or a living room, this artwork brings a sense of historical travel and exploration to traditional and eclectic domestic interiors.

Orientalist watercolour paintings feature depictions of North Africa, the Levant, and the Middle East, created primarily by Western European artists during the nineteenth century. These works concentrate on regional architecture, local figures, arid landscapes, and historic ruins.

Artists used ground earth pigments suspended in water-soluble binders such as gum arabic, applied directly to heavy paper or paperboard backing boards to create layered translucent washes.

Authentic works show characteristic paper oxidation, delicate brushwork layering, era-appropriate mounting methods, and natural age-related toning along the board edges.

Place the artwork within a dark wood or gilded frame to anchor a gallery wall, or display it above traditional furniture to introduce warm, earthy tones into neutral rooms.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight behind UV-protective glass, maintain stable humidity levels, and avoid moisture exposure to protect the paper fibers and pigments from fading or foxing.
