The George II period spans from 1727 to 1760, characterised by a transition from heavier walnut designs to robust oak and increasingly refined mahogany. Furniture from this era often exhibits classical architectural motifs, sturdy proportions, and a shift towards greater comfort and domestic utility.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid local timbers such as oak, elm, and fruitwood, utilising traditional joinery methods including hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and pegged framing. Backboards and drawer linings frequently feature secondary softwoods like pine.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate tool marks, such as pit-sawing striations on unexposed surfaces and hand-beveled drawer bottoms. Original brass hardware, natural timber oxidisation, shrinkage cracks, and structural wear consistent with age are key indicators of authenticity.

An antique oak dresser functions effectively as a grounding element in modern spaces, offering textural contrast against neutral walls or minimalist decor. It can be utilised in a dining area for tableware storage or in a hallway as a statement console to anchor the room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable ambient humidity and temperature levels to prevent timber splitting or warping. Furniture should be kept out of direct sunlight and treated periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood and maintain its protective patina.
