Description

A beautiful and very unusual early antique Victorian mahogany architects desk. This was made in England, and I would date it from the 1840-1860 period.

It appears as a regular pedestal desk with a gold tooled leather top, turned mahogany handles and bun feet. However, on the back, there are gate leg supports that swing out, and the top unfolds to reveal a larger inner work space. There is another inset leather top inside that can be angles upwards, and six small storage compartments with lids.

We have had this re-polished, it is in lovely condition for its age. The colour tone and patina of the mahogany are lovely. The outer leather top has some surface wear and light marks, with one tiny repair to the leather in the middle. We could have it re-leathered, but right now the leather matches the one inside.

This is quite a rare & useful piece of furniture & is also of very high quality.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian architectural desks emerged during the 19th century to accommodate the needs of draughtsmen, architects, and scholars, often featuring specialized surfaces and numerous drawers for plans and instruments.

These desks are typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods like solid mahogany, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction and inset tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentication involves inspecting the secondary timbers used in drawer linings, checking for hand-cut dovetailing, verifying period-appropriate brass or wooden turned knobs, and looking for signs of natural age-related timber oxidisation.

An antique mahogany desk works effectively as a focal point in a modern study or living space, contrasted against minimalist seating or neutral wall colours to highlight its rich grain and historical character.

Maintain the timber using high-quality beeswax applied sparingly, and clean the leather insert with a damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can degrade the vintage finish.
