Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian set comprises thirteen graduated imperial standard weights, dating from the nineteenth century. The collection follows a traditional bell shape with turned cylindrical bodies, stepped circular bases, and hollow loop handles at the top, arranged in a descending sequence from the largest down to the smallest quarter-ounce piece. Each piece is cast from bronze with a polished gold-coloured finish and displays stamped verification markings, including Royal ciphers VR and ER, the number 521, and specific marks for the Isle of Man. The pieces show minor surface variations consistent with historic metrology equipment. The set ranges in capacity from 56 lbs down to ¼ oz, varying in height from under 2 cm for the smallest piece up to approximately 30 cm for the largest. These items work well displayed together on a bookshelf or library table within a study or gentleman's library setting.

FAQs

Imperial standard weights served as official master reference units used by local authorities and trade inspectors to verify the accuracy of commercial scales and measuring equipment within a specific jurisdiction.

Official reference weights were predominantly cast from dense alloys such as solid brass or bronze to ensure durability, weight precision, and resistance to corrosion during regular handling and transport.

Authentic imperial standard weights feature official verification stamps, royal cyphers, local council markings, or precise weight denominations incised into the metal casing alongside a lead adjustment plug at the base.

Graduated sets of brass weights can be arranged in linear or grouped formations along open shelving, mantlepieces, or sturdy executive desks to add metallic texture and historical contrast.

Brass objects should be dusted regularly with a soft microfibre cloth. To preserve the metal without stripping historical stamps, avoid abrasive chemicals and apply a light coating of specialised wax sparingly.
