A. Winter Shaw "Folding Time" watercolour is an Edwardian pastoral artwork on paper dating from 1920. This English country house piece displays a muted blue dusky atmospheric wash depicting a shepherd with sheep in a pastoral landscape, signed lower left. The watercolour uses glass and sits within a heavily moulded gilt wood frame displaying carved egg-and-dart borders, beadwork detailing, and a multi-stepped profile with visible age wear. The painting measures 56 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 7 cm deep in total. Placement suits rooms like a living room or dining area, positioned above a sideboard to add traditional character to domestic interiors. The piece brings a quiet bucolic mood to walls, hanging securely from standard picture hooks using wire attached to the reverse of the frame.

FAQs

Pastoral watercolours from this era typically depict tranquil rural scenes, agricultural life, and livestock, rendered with delicate washes to capture natural light and atmospheric tone.

Traditional pieces feature watercolour pigments applied to heavy cotton rag paper, mounted behind protective glass within carved wooden or composition frames finished in gold leaf.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural paper toning, original framer labels or inscriptions on the reverse, artist signatures, and subtle tonal gradations unique to hand-applied paint.

Position the framed artwork above a sideboard or mantelpiece to create a grounded focal point that introduces organic colour into neutral or contemporary spaces.

Display the painting away from direct light sources to prevent fading, maintain a stable humidity level, and clean the glass frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
