A Late C19th Chinese Gouache Painting On Pith Paper
£650 $823 €784
A Charming Late C19th to Early C20th Chinese Gouache Painting on Pith Paper. Featuring an array of colourful Koi Carp swimming amongst reeds. Nicely executed with wonderful strong colours. Suitable mounted and framed in faux bamboo. Reglazed under anti-reflective Artglass.
Chinese pith paintings become more popular in the early C19th. They are are vibrant artworks created on soft, translucent pith paper, often mistaken for paintings on rice paper. Made from the Tetrapanax papyrifera plant, the pith’s unique cellular structure, similar to a wasp''s nest, enhances its translucency and reactivity to moisture. These paintings, mainly crafted for export to Europe, are known for their vivid colours and raised effects created with the use of thick gouache.
