Brave Fine Art has dated this Antique Oil Painting Portrait to the 1890s.
It’s an homage to the Renaissance and, in this respect, it’s interesting to compare it with Eleanor of Toledo’s exquisite ensemble from 350 years earlier.
However, it’s also nuanced with peculiarities that are drawn from local folk traditions, possibly those of Southern Germany, with the red carnation a charming addition. Typically, red carnations symbolise enduring, imperishable and everlasting love.
The painting is signed, possibly ‘Weithag H’ or similar.
