An Unusual Middle Eastern Painted Spelter Match Striker in the form of a middle eastern man sitting next to a basket (matchstick holder) sitting on his magic carpet. There is a small match striker in front of him – circa 1920.

Popularised during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Orientalist metalware reflected European fascination with Middle Eastern and North African themes. Manufacturers produced decorative desk items, including match strikers and vesta cases, often cast in spelter or bronze and detailed with cold paint.

Figural match strikers were commonly cast from speltera zinc alloyor solid bronze. The surfaces were often finished with cold-painted enamel pigments and featured ribbed or abrasive surfaces made of textured metal or glass for igniting friction matches.

Authentic pieces generally display natural wear to the cold-painted surface, fine casting details around the figures and textiles, and faint seam lines from hand-joined mould castings. A textured, functional striking pad is typically integrated into the base or container.
