An okimono is a traditional Japanese decorative statue or ornament, typically displayed in a home alcove or on a shelf, which gained significant popularity among western collectors during the Meiji period.

Meiji period metalworkers primarily utilised copper alloys, commonly referred to as bronze or shibuichi, often enriched with patination techniques to achieve deep brown, black, or subtle metallic hues.

Authentic pieces generally feature high-craftsmanship lost-wax casting, detailed hand-chased finishing, naturalistic ageing patinas, and occasionally artist signatures or foundry seals on the underside.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a credenza, mantelpiece, or glass display cabinet, allowing neutral lighting to highlight its metallic texture and dark patina against minimalist backdrops.

Dust the sculpture gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any commercial cleaning agents, polishes, or moisture that could damage the historic patina.
