This hand-painted plate features the renowned '' The Yellow Lion'' pattern, executed in meticulous and exquisite detail. Despite the name, the cat depicted in the design resembles a tiger more than a lion, but the original name has remained in use.
The design was first created at Meissen in the early 18th century (circa 1728) and was commissioned for Augustus the Strong. It was inspired by the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of Japanese Kakiemon porcelain.
The pattern has been reproduced and adapted over time.
This particular plate dates from the late 19th century.
Fully hallmarked on the reverse: blue crossed swords with ‘16’ imprint. The edge of the rim is painted brown.
Dimensions: Diameter 22.7 cm, height 6 cm.
Condition: Fantastic condition, like new. There are two small smears of brown paint on the back.
