Fire bellows have been used since ancient times to direct air into a fire to increase combustion. In eighteenth-century households, they were essential domestic tools for managing open hearths used for heating and cooking before the advent of central heating.

Traditional bellows were constructed using native hardwoods such as elm or oak for the paddle sides, hinged with leather gussets, and fitted with an iron or brass nozzle. Decorative brass or iron tacks were frequently hammered along the leather edges to secure the material and reinforce the structure.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate hand tools marks, hand-forged iron components, dry patinated timbers with natural grain wear, and period-specific fastening methods such as hand-cut tacks rather than modern machine-made screws or staples.

These pieces can be displayed functionally beside an active fireplace or hung on a wall as sculptural hearth art. They complement traditional, rustic, and transitional interior schemes by introducing historical texture and craft.

Preservation involves keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent wood splitting and leather degradation. The wooden surfaces can be maintained with occasional applications of microcrystalline wax, while leather requires specialized conditioning to prevent cracking.
