A very finely enamelled portrait plaque showing Daphne – a maiden in medieval dress holding laurel leaves. It is signed Sarlandie Limoges – Jules Sarlandie (1874-1936) one of the finest enamellers of the period. Made in France c 1910 it is in its original frame. Overall frame size 29 cm x 26 cm.
Jules Sarlandie was a French enameller in the early 20th century. He was born in 1874, and settled in Limoges at the end of the century. He practiced enameling, a newly rediscovered job. He was constantly looking for and testing new techniques and shapes and stayed away from classic productions. In the early 1900s, he was famous for his perfect technical skills in Limoges enamel, and created Art Nouveau table pieces and enamel paintings. In the late 1920s he became a pioneer in Art Deco style enamel and glass work and worked with interior designers to create enamel pieces. His works were sold in Limoges but also in Parisian luxury stores like Le Grand Dépôt. He died in 1936 at the peak of h...is popularity.
Daphne was a Greek dryad, or tree spirit, and daughter of Peneus, the river god. According to mythology, Apollo, the god of hunting, music, and poetry, offended Eros, the god of love, by mocking his archery skills. Eros retaliated by shooting two arrows: one hit Apollo and filled him with insatiable lust for Daphne, the other hit Daphne and filled her with abhorrence for all things romantic. Apollo pursued Daphne and when she was tired of running she called for help to her father, who turned her into a laurel tree. Apollo adorned himself with laurel leaves and called it his special symbol, which explains why the laurel tree is associated with the god Apollo in Greek myth.
