Description

Exquisite 19th Century Painting by Paul Viry - Signed "1880 Paris"

This stunning oil on board by renowned artist Paul Viry captures the grace and beauty of a young woman in an idyllic Renaissance Revival setting. Signed “Paul Viry 1880 Paris,” the piece showcases the woman at the edge of a serene lake, feeding swans and exotic birds, with her loyal dog by her side, holding a basket of treats (though likely wondering why none are for him!).

Behind her, an ornate statue, lush flowers, and rich fauna complete the scene, adding depth and charm to this exquisite work. Having remained in the same family collection for decades, it is now fresh to the market in its original frame. This timeless artwork is a true collector’s piece for those with an eye for beauty and history.

Born in Pocé, France, Paul Alphonse Viry studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under François-Édouard Picot, an official painter of the July Monarchy. From 1861 to 1891, Viry was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Beaux-Arts, gaining recognition in 1864 when Princess Mathilde, cousin of Napoleon III, purchased his painting *Dans le Bois*. He also found success in the United States, with exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Brooklyn Art Association. Notably, art dealers like Avery and Lucas promoted his work, and Philadelphia collector Warren E. Burgess acquired several of his pieces.

Viry was known for his exceptional attention to detail, specializing in documentary studies and still-lifes in the troubadour style, often depicting scenes from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. His work stood out for its meticulous portrayal of animals, especially hunting dogs and birds, as well as detailed renderings of furniture and fabrics.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century French Academic painting is defined by high technical polish, historical and narrative themes, classical composition, and realistic depiction of textures such as silk, marble, and foliage.

Artistry from this period typically utilised oil-based pigments applied to natural linen canvas stretched over wooden stretcher bars. Frames were constructed from carved wood or molded plaster over wood, finished with gold leaf gilded surfaces.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural craquelure across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the back of the canvas and wooden stretchers, period-appropriate hand-carved or molded frames, and artist signatures or dates integrated into the paint layer.

An ornate gilt-framed oil painting works effectively as a focal point mounted above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece, creating contrast between historic detail and clean architectural lines.

Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding direct contact with flaky paint surfaces. Keep the painting out of direct sunlight and environments with fluctuating humidity, and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning or varnish restoration.
