A bronze mortar is a heavy vessel traditionally used with a pestle to crush, grind, and mix herbs, spices, medicines, or chemicals in domestic kitchens, pharmacies, and laboratories.

These items were typically cast using the lost-wax method or in sand molds, utilising an alloy of copper and tin known as bronze, which provided the necessary weight and durability.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy tactile weight, irregular casting marks, natural age-related patination, and wear patterns consistent with centuries of manual use.

Such historic vessels work well as decorative accent objects on open shelving, mantelpieces, or side tables, adding a touch of historical texture and metallic contrast to modern spaces.

Preservation involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or polishes that might strip away the historic patina and oxidisation.
